Assault

An assault case occurs when you cause bodily injury or pain to someone either intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly.

For instance, if you punch someone in the nose, causing them pain or bodily injury, you can be charged with assault.  This type of simple assault would probably be charged as a misdemeanor, with the possibility of up to one year in jail and a $2,000.00 fine.  Because this type of case is a full misdemeanor, you have a right to a jury trial.

If the injury is more extensive (for instance broken bones), you could be charged with felony assault.  Use of a weapon can also cause felony liability.
