This type of assault has a possible maximum 5-10 year jail sentence.  It occurs if you assault someone with a weapon, or cause serious injury without a weapon.  For example, if you punch someone in the face, breaking their jaw, this could be felony assault.  If it causes permanent disfigurement, you could face up to 10 years in jail.
